Why is managing notification so important?
Monday April 30th, 2018
It’s happened to just about everyone. When you are doing something important, BEEP! When you are about to go to sleep, BEEP! It just won’t stop! Of course, notifications are powerful and useful when they inform you some important events or your priorities. But sometimes they become distractions. Let’s find out how to manage your notifications.
Why should you manage your notifications?
There are so many apps in the world now. Between must-have apps such as Facebook, WhatsApp, text messages, Instagram, emails, and some news apps, you can end up receiving notifications every few minutes. The fact is that majority of these aren’t really that important or useful to you. So managing the notifications will not only bring you peace of mind, but it’ll stop you from receiving many unnecessary alerts.
Don’t disturb me
You can temporarily turn off all notification through “Do not disturb” option. The smartphone won’t ring or vibrate and can even switch off all forms of interruption when this option is on. Don’t worry. This isn’t mean that you are not getting any alert. You DO receive notification but you won’t be disturbed by then as your phone will remain silent and the screen stays off.
Go to settings > notification page to find [Do not disturb] on Android. You can turn on or off this option and select your priorities to set details.
You can also find [Do not disturb] option on settings for IOS. When this mode is on, a moon icon appears in the status bar to make sure you know you are in [Do not disturb] mode.
Limit notifications to certain apps
Some people prefer to manage their notifications one-by-one because each app have different priority. You may want to receive messages but not the email. For those, here is the way how you can change the notification settings for each of them.
On notification section, you can find Apps category for setting notification for apps. Press each apps and select Block, Priority, or Allow peeking options.
For IOS, select an app which you want to change the notification settings. You can literally turn off all notification for a specific app.
Sometimes, it’s better to put down your phone and step away
When the phone beeps, you automatically look at it even though you’ve already guessed it’s not that important. If you can’t look at them because you are driving, talking to an important client, or maybe cooking, you’re mind is full with curiosity and eager to have look at it. Consider leave your phone somewhere far from you when you are doing something so it won’t bother you at all.
Unplug from email outside of work
The persistent deluge of email presents the biggest challenge in notification management. Nobody want to mix the work with their outside-of-work life. If you receive an email outside of work, you will be stressed out of the fact that sometimes you can’t respond to them right away. Let them know you will be responding to emails on work hours but not the after.
Jmobile apps also have various notification options. For example, HD Video downloader has setting for a notification. When you enable [Use Notification] setting, you will be asked with messages about downloading videos. If you unable them, no message will appear before you download a video.
JM Filemanager also has notification option. You can receive a notification when files larger than 100MB are added. If you are always dealing with large files, this option should be turned off.
Manage your notifications wisely so you won’t be bothered or interrupted by those unnecessary alert rings or messages.
